The native Manuka shrub (Leptospermum scoparium) grows from a shrub into a large tree. Over the years, Manuka honey has become best known for its unique bio-active compounds. The Maori already used the Manuka Shrub because of its unique properties. Thomas Cook introduced the first honey bees to New Zealand in 1839. The unique properties of Manuka Honig have been known for years, but why it is so unique was only discovered in 2006.
